Google's search function works same as other search engines.The crawlers or spiders travel from web,going through link to link and build up an index page that includes some keywords.Google references this index when a user enters a keyword search query and displays the pages that contain the keyword.Its algorithm works by searching the pages that contains the keywords that user is searching for,then assigns a page rank to each of the site based on some important factors and the higher ranked pages appear in Google search results page.

This is what Google uses to rank a site, but no one knows what is really the algorithm of Google..They change it regularly so no one can manipulate the rankings of the sites..
